Snow problems continue in North

Snow is continuing to cause problems for travellers across the north-east of England, with several roads closed.

Parts of County Durham and Northumberland have been worst hit, with up to 6cm (2.4in) in places.

In County Durham, the A690 was closed at Houghton Cut due to stranded lorries and minor accidents blocked the A19 near Durham and A183 near Sunderland.

At one point on Sunday about 50 lorries were stranded on the A68 route from Northumberland to Scotland.

BBC Weather warned driving would be "treacherous" in many areas.

The Met Office also said there was at least an 80% chance of heavy snow and widespread icy roads to come across north-west England.

Bob Syvret, Met Office forecaster, said: "Disruption should be kept to a minimum with day temperatures up at about six degrees but we are keeping an eye on the situation.

"There could be problems with snow and ice for anyone travelling at night."

The unusually cold spell is likely to lift by Tuesday, he added.
