Parts of County Durham saw a covering of snowfall on Saturday morning as forecasters predicted more wintry conditions for the north of England.

People in the Stanhope area awoke to a covering with half an inch recorded in some places.

The Met Office said warm temperatures in the day would melt much of the covering but warned more was to come.

The heaviest falls are predicted during Sunday and Monday night which could cause problems for motorists.

Bob Syvret, Met Office forecaster, said: "We have seen a light dusting in parts on Saturday but we expect a few centimetres by Monday morning.

"Disruption should be kept to a minimum with day temperatures up at about six degrees but we are keeping an eye on the situation.

"There could be problems with snow and ice for anyone travelling at night."

The unusually cold spell is likely to lift by Tuesday, he added.
