Power lines checked from the sky
Electricity pylons
The airborne patrols will examine power lines from above
Helicopters are to be used to check hundreds miles of overhead power lines across the north east of England.

Engineers from CE Electric UK will be using their bird's eye view to pinpoint any areas where action is need to cut back trees or replace equipment.

The checks, which are dependent on the weather, will cover about 7,000km (4,349 miles) of high voltage wires.

They will operate in the Alnwick, Ashington, Newcastle, Durham, Darlington and Northallerton areas.

Farmers and livestock owners are reassured that the low-flying patrols will try to avoid areas populated with livestock.

Mike Leighton, from CE Electric UK, said: "Helicopter patrols provide valuable information that allows us to target essential maintenance such as tree trimming to safeguard against potential disruptions to electricity supplies."
