'Unsightly' power lines removed
Power lines
It is hoped the work will make the area more attractive to tourists
A North Yorkshire village has been chosen for the start of a scheme to remove overhead power lines from Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

CE Electric UK is spending 6.6m putting cables underground throughout Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Work has started in Terrington, in the Howardian Hills AONB, and is expected to take five months to complete.

The firm said in some places the cables were "adversely affecting the character and appearance of the landscape."

A CE Electric UK spokesman said there were also safety concerns in some places where vegetation was growing into the power lines.

Work in Nettleton in the Lincolnshire Wolds is set to start in September and a further seven sites will be announced shortly, he said.

Sites were chosen based on the proportion of overhead lines in each National Park and AONB.

Howardian Hills AONB officer Paul Jackson said: "Terrington is a particularly beautiful village which attracts many visitors.

"CE Electric UK's work will make it even more appealing. The steering group decided on this location because Terrington is a Conservation Area and the existing poles are particularly unsightly."
