NHS change protesters go on march
Walnuttree Hospital campaigners
Campaigners fought to keep the Walnuttree Hospital in Suffolk
More than 1,000 people have been taking part in a protest march against changes to the NHS in East Anglia.

The protest was held in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, where Hinchingbrooke Hospital is vulnerable to closure because of a 24m debt.

Supporters also came from Suffolk where Hartismere Hospital in Eye is to close and 16 beds are to go from Aldeburgh.

Organisers of the protest said it was one of Britain's biggest demonstrations of concern over cuts to the NHS.

Campaigners are urging West Suffolk Primary Care Trust to abandon proposed cuts at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket Hospital.

They also protested over reductions to in-patient beds at the Wallnuttree Hospital in Sudbury and the loss of 200 jobs at three main hospitals managed by the Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Trust.

Karen Jennings, head of health at Unison, said: "Local people are joining these protests in their droves because they care about their local hospital.

"It shows that people are not interested in choice or privatisation. What they want is a good local hospital they can use when they are sick."
