New youth scheme to curb disorder
Council chiefs in County Durham are hoping to extend a project which is helping tackle anti-social behaviour.

The Westside scheme was set up by Darlington Council in July 2005 to give young people things to do and keep them out of trouble.

The award-winning scheme at Branksome School proved extremely popular with young people in the area and has curbed disorderly behaviour.

Now the council is hoping to extend the project to other areas.

The extended scheme will include additional activities including residential trips, late-night sports and dance workshops.

The scheme, which could have pilot projects operating by November, will be based on the theme, "something to do, somewhere to go, someone to talk to", and will encourage young people to get involved in planning and running activities.

It will be aimed at youngsters aged 13 to 19, and by next summer it is hoped the pilot projects will have been rolled out throughout the town.
