Nearly 30,000 rounds of ammunition have been handed in |
In the first two weeks of the national guns amnesty, 321 weapon have been handed into police stations across Kent. The month-long amnesty was launched on 30 March to encourage owners of illegal or unwanted guns to hand them over.
People can surrender their weapons with no questions asked and no fear of prosecution.
As well as a number of rifles, shotguns and handguns, 29, 621 rounds of ammunition have also been given up.
Weapons handed in North Kent - 36 West Kent - 34 Maidstone - 25 Medway - 26 Swale - 28 Canterbury - 30 Thanet - 42 South East Kent - 48 Weald - 41 Headquarters - 11 |
Two thirds of the rounds were handed over in Thanet of which the majority were air gun pellets.
The amnesty comes just before new legislation is brought in which will make it an offence to carry imitation guns and air weapons in a public place.
A five-year minimum sentence is also being brought in for possession of a prohibited firearm.
Superintendent Jerry Price, from Kent Police, said: "The number of weapons and rounds of ammunition surrendered so far is very encouraging.
"Every gun and every round of ammunition surrendered is one less gun and one less round of ammunition able to fall into the wrong hands."
Supt Price urged anyone else with illegal weapons and imitation guns to hand them in during the last two weeks of the amnesty.
