The Grand National is due to run on Saturday |
A survey on the Grand National has shown a majority of people do not think the race is cruel to horses. The poll showed that, while 41% of people believe the race is cruel, 50% did not.
Results of the poll - commissioned by campaign group Animal Aid - showed the other nine per cent of people were undecided or had no opinion.
The NOP poll was released on Thursday, as the three-day race meeting, culminating in the big race on Saturday, was getting underway at Aintree, Merseyside.
It showed half of women but less than a third of men regarded the race as cruel.
Pollsters questioned 1,042 adults.
According to Animal Aid 27 horses competing at the three-day race meeting have died since 1997.
Eleven out of 40 starters managed to finish the 30-jump, four-and-a-half mile race in 2002.
