War stops Grand National fireworks
Grand National
The Grand National is one of the world's most famous horse races
A large fireworks display planned during the Grand National horse racing festival has been cancelled over fears it would be "insensitive" during the war with Iraq.

The free show was planned to take place in Liverpool city centre on Friday 4 April.

But it was called off because organisers felt the fireworks would remind people too much of the war.

Chas Cole, of CMP Entertainment, said: "Explosions and bright lights in the night at this time of war is inappropriate and the decision has been made to cancel."

The Big Bang event was among a number of events marking the internationally famous festival, which takes place at Aintree race course, Merseyside.

Other events are still going ahead to mark the festival, which takes place from 31 March to 6 April.

They include a big screen at Chevasse Park on the Saturday afternoon of the big race.

Veterans from Everton and Liverpool will also go head to head in a show at the Royal Court.
