Aintree's ground in 'safe' hands
Grand National race
Last year the condition of the ground led to criticism
Landscapers from Mold have been drafted in to ensure the going is good for this year's Grand National.

Medina Landscape are part of a team of workers contracted to maintain Liverpool's Aintree racecourse over the three-day annual event.

Grand National
Where: Aintree, Liverpool
Distance: Four miles, four furlongs (7.2km)
Total prize money: 490,000
Fences: 30
2001 field size: 40
Key features: First fence, Beeches Brook, Canal Turn, The Chair
Did you know? A record 66 horses lined up for the 1929 renewal, won by 100-1 shot Gregalach

It is a key event in the UK's sporting calendar and is one of the few occasions when virtually everyone in the country is aware of horse racing.

Out of the 144 horses entered a maximum of 40 runners have been chosen to take part in the race, which takes place on Saturday 6 April.

Last year, race organisers were heavily criticised by sections of the media for allowing the race to go ahead despite very heavy going.

The conditions resulted in just four horses finishing, led by Red Marauder.

This year Medina Landscape have said they will do everything they can to make sure the ground is in good condition.

Medina business partner Rhodri Rhys said: "We will of course work tirelessly over the three days to ensure that the right ground and hurdle conditions are maintained for a fabulous meet and a Grand National."

A team of around 12 workers from the company will begin preparing the racecourse from Thursday onwards.

Mr Rhys added: "This contract offers an excellent opportunity for Medina to make its mark.

"If we continue to secure similar work opportunities we will undoubtedly be expanding our workforce."

The Grand National is commonly regarded as the world's most testing steeplechase.

The competition is run over four miles and four furlongs and is open to horses aged six and over.
