The amnesty means people can give up guns without facing charges |
People in Avon and Somerset are being asked to hand over illegal firearms as part of a national guns amnesty. During the amnesty, which runs from 31 March to 30 April, people will be able to hand in illegal weapons without fear of prosecution.
As well as prohibited, unlicensed and unwanted firearms, officers are encouraging people to hand in air weapons and imitation guns, which are frequently used to commit crimes.
The move follows the introduction of new sentences for illegal possession of prohibited firearms - which could see those convicted facing a minimum five-year sentence.
Safe disposal
Chief Constable Steve Pilkington said: "There are several reasons why people might own guns and ammunition without valid certificates.
"This amnesty gives people the chance to hand in these weapons simply and safely and without fear of prosecution.
"Every gun given up is one less that the criminals can use."
Police stations across the Avon and Somerset force area will be equipped with facilities for the safe disposal of any arms handed over.
Chief Constable Pilkington added: "Gun crime is a cause of major concern for everyone living in this area - we want to rid our streets of this dangerous menace."
Anyone who wants to hand in a gun is asked to take it to their local police station, or to phone their station - not 999 - for advice.
