Police support guns amnesty

125 firearms have recently been handed in to Wiltshire Police
A total of 142 firearms incidents were reported in Wiltshire over the last six months, say police.

Two-thirds of the incidents related to BB guns or air weapons.

From the end of March until 30 April, a firearms amnesty will be held in the UK.

During the last nationwide amnesty in 1996, more than 800 weapons and 2.5 tons of ammunition were surrendered in Wiltshire.

A police spokesperson told the BBC: "The possession of firearms, replica firearms and air weapons is an extremely serious matter.

"We cannot stress enough the importance of public support for this amnesty."

In the first three months of 2003, 125 firearms - including shotguns - have been handed over to Wiltshire police.
