Councillor's traffic light concern

Councillor Taylor fears changes may result in gridlock
Possible plans to replace a third Swindon roundabout with traffic lights have been criticised by a Labour councillor.

Swindon Council changed Old Town's Newport Street junction with Devizes Road from a roundabout to traffic lights before reverting to a roundabout.

It also announced the roundabout at the entrance to the bus station was to be replaced by traffic lights.

Now Councillor John Taylor says he fears traffic lights may replace the roundabout at the corner of Faringdon Road Park.

Changes considered

The councillor said the move could lead to gridlock at a junction which was running perfectly smoothly.

The council confirmed that changes to the junction were being considered.

A spokesman for the council said officers were considering how best to improve safety and traffic flow in Faringdon Road.

"They will be discussing Faringdon Road and the junction near The Ship with elected members."

Safety improvements for Faringdon Road costing 21,000 are among 15 schemes in the Local Transport Plan 2002/03, published last April.
