| Thursday, 6 February, 2003, 10:40 GMT Cameras installed at 18 crash hotspots ![]() All the cameras should be up and running by April Speed cameras are being installed at 18 accident blackspots in Sussex in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths on the road. The bright yellow painted cameras will be placed at locations around the county where there is a history of serious crashes. The scheme was set up by a multi-agency partnership which includes East and West Sussex county councils, Brighton and Hove City Council, Sussex Police and the Highways Agency. The devices will be paid for through government grants made available from money paid to the treasury from speeding fines.
Partnership spokeswoman, Emma Rogers, said: "The aim of the partnership, through the use of cameras, is to reduce the number of speed related crashes. "If speeds are reduced by just 1mph we can expect a reduction in casualties by up to 5%. "If people stop speeding in Sussex we have achieved our aim." The housing for the cameras are already being installed at locations in Sussex and Miss Rogers said the devices should all be up and running by April. Coldean Lane in Brighton is the first site to have the housing installed and the camera should be operating from next week. | See also: 28 Jan 03 | N Ireland 19 Dec 02 | England 26 Nov 02 | Scotland 27 May 02 | Wales 06 Jun 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
