| Friday, 31 January, 2003, 14:12 GMT Millions invested in new libraries ![]() The libraries will be the first built in the city for 20 years Four new libraries are to be built in Bristol as part of a 3m upgrade of facilities. The buildings in Bedminster, Hartcliffe, Whitchurch and St Paul's will be the first new libraries in the city for 20 years. The 3m investment is linked with Bristol's bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2008. As part of the modernisation, computers will be installed for use in the libraries.
In Bedminster, a new library development - including offices and an art gallery, a doctors' surgery and flats - will replace the existing Grade II listed building at Bedminster Parade. A replacement library for Hartcliffe is proposed as part of supermarket redevelopment plans for Symes Avenue. In Whitchurch, the city council has agreed a land deal with Bristol South and West Primary Care Trust to create a library as part of the redevelopment of Whitchurch District Centre. In St Paul's, Bristol City Council's library service has joined forces with community education to provide a new library and lifelong learning resource as part of the new St Paul's learning centre. New services The 2m to fund the St Paul's development has come from the Learning and Skills Council and the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. The Whitchurch development is expected to open in 2006 with the other facilities up-and-running in 2004. Deputy leader of the city council Helen Holland said: "Bristol libraries are leading the way into the digital age with exciting new services such as computerised learning centres. "These partnerships will enable us to provide modern buildings to match the new technology we are providing in libraries, better meeting the needs of the communities they serve." | See also: 30 Jan 03 | England 21 Jan 03 | England 21 Jan 03 | England 21 Jan 03 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
