Delivery service gives food for thought

Books are delivered by motorcycle courier
East London libraries are using a pizza-delivery style service to bring books to members' doors.

Newham library service hopes to tap into the popularity of home delivery in order to fit in better with people's busy modern lifestyles.

The council believes its trial 'Book Express' scheme is the first in the country and will encourage those with little free time to make use of the library.

Members can phone or e-mail in requests for up to three books to be delivered by a motorcycle courier within two hours, for a 3 charge.

A council spokesman said the scheme was an attempt to make the libraries as "modern and user friendly" as possible.

"Members can borrow books without leaving the home or the office, or if they simply cannot find the time to use our services in the normal way," he added.

"We want to make sure our libraries are as convenient and customer focused as possible."

The number of visitors to public libraries in the UK has declined by 20% over the last 10 years.

Many libraries have responded by expanding, to include free internet access and loaning videos and DVDs.
