| Wednesday, 8 January, 2003, 12:14 GMT Council tax could rise ![]() Tax bills could rise by 20% Householders in Stoke-on-Trent could face big council tax rises following new government spending guidelines, councillors have warned. Stoke-on-Trent City Council has been told by the government it should increase its spending by �35m to �261m. But the government has only given the council a grant for less than half of the increase and councillors are to meet on Wednesday to discuss ways of saving money. The increased spending target could see tax bills rise by at least 10%. Difficult position The city's mayor Mike Wolfe says it puts them in a very difficult position. "What we're doing is a number of things including looking at every bit of our expenditure and every single job we're doing. "We're then looking at whether it is necessary and if so are we doing it right." Councillors will discuss ways of saving money in order to meet the government's spending guidelines at a meeting on Wednesday.
