Cancer heroine wins top award
Jane Tomlinson
Jane Tomlinson has bravely battled against cancer
Leeds cancer heroine Jane Tomlinson has been honoured at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

The mother-of-three won the Helen Rollason award for raising 105,000 for cancer research.

Jane Tomlinson, 38, became the first terminally ill competitor to complete the London Marathon, London Triathlon and Great North Run.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Paul Radcliffe, who presented her award, said: "She's a more deserving winner than anyone else here."

Ms Tomlinson was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 years ago but despite a mastectomy the cancer later spread to her lungs.

She is still undergoing chemotherapy treatment for her condition and her exploits recently earned her the prestigious title of Yorkshire Woman of the Year.

Ms Tomlinson announced she was giving up competitive running after presenting her cheque to Cancer Research UK in November.

Spokeswoman Helen Robertson said she had become an inspiration for thousands of terminally ill people.

"She has not only inspired and touched the hearts of the nation but all those at Cancer Research UK.

"We cannot thank her enough," she said.
