A Lincolnshire man has been jailed for 12 months and banned from matches for six years for football violence.

Mark Want, 29, was involved in London's worst ever football riot which took place after a match between Birmingham City and Millwall.

He hurled missiles at police after violence erupted following Millwall's play-off defeat in May this year.

The Old Bailey heard that Want, a Millwall supporter from Queen Street, Stamford, took part in the violence for about half an hour.

Horses injured

He was told the sentence could have been far higher but for his guilty plea to a charge of violent disorder.

More than 100 police officers and several horses were injured when fans went on the rampage outside the ground in south London.

The violence followed the Division One side's defeat to Birmingham City in an end of season promotion decider.

Passing sentence, Judge Dunn told Want that violence at football matches is now regarded as very serious.
