Violent hooligan faces jail

Police horses were injured during the violence
A football hooligan who threw missiles at the police during a post-match riot faces a jail sentence.

Mark Want, 28, joined in the violence that followed Millwall's play-off defeat by Birmingham on 2 May this year.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder at a hearing at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday.

Want, from Stamford in Lincolnshire, denied a further charge of riot, which will lie on file.

Video evidence

Thugs left officers and police horses injured in the two-hour long violent clashes outside Millwall's New Den ground, in Bermondsey, southeast London.

It followed a crucial Division One play-off game which Birmingham City won 1-0.

Lesley Jones, defending, said: "He's never been to prison before, and is on remand, but there are personal circumstances that may affect the length of sentence."

Judge Hubert Dunn, QC adjourned sentencing Want until 2 December when a video detailing his part in the disorder will be played.

He was remanded in custody.

Of the 300 officers on duty that night, 150 were injured as well as 17 police horses after they were pelted with bricks, pieces of wood, and other missiles.
