The 11th annual National Bat Conference, which is running from 6 to 8 September, will include speakers from bat groups, government agencies and academic institutions. Among the topics to be discussed are social segregation, ageing, sexing and handling bats. Which leaves the highlights - a grand ceilidh and a quiz to find "the bat brain of Britain." Survival threat The event is being organised by the Bat Conservation Trust, Britain's only organisation solely dedicated to the mammal's welfare. One of the aims of the conference is to increase interest in bats among young people. Despite being protected under UK law, many bat species face extinction because of changes to their habitats. Delegates will look at the biology and ecology of endangered species as well as conservation measures. The university is home to a colony of bats at Whiteknights Lake in the campus grounds. | See also: 09 Aug 02 | Science/Nature 30 Jul 02 | England 18 Apr 02 | England 01 Mar 02 | England 16 Oct 02 | Science/Nature Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
