Tributes paid to helicopter crash victims
Mourners at St.Nicholas church
Hundreds attended the memorial service
Tributes have been paid at a memorial service for the victims of a helicopter crash which killed 10 people and left another feared dead.

On Sunday, a special service was held at St Nicholas' Church, Great Yarmouth, conducted by the Bishop of Thetford, the Right Reverend Dr David Atkinson.

It was also attended by representatives of Shell UK, engineering firm AMEC and aviation company Bristow Helicopters Ltd, which all lost staff in Tuesday's crash off the Norfolk coast.

On Saturday, search teams recovered the "black box" flight recorder from the Sikorsky S-76 which came down during a flight between gas and oil stations.

The shock of their loss exposes something of the depths of the way we human beings can love and be loved

A congregation of about 300 heard Dr Atkinson give thanks for the lives of the men.

"We are here to remember, to pay tribute, and to give thanks," he said.

"To remember those who so tragically and unexpectedly lost their lives last Tuesday on a quiet evening with clear skies and a calm sea.

"They were going to work, they were doing their duty, they were serving our community."

The clergyman spoke of the men's dedication and service and all those who risk their lives working in the offshore industry.

"The shock of their loss exposes something of the depths of the way we human beings can love and be loved," he said.

"And love cannot be quenched, even by the powerful waters which have claimed these lives."

Rescue teams have been working all week to search for the men who were on board the helicopter.

All but one body has been recovered while the "black box" will be studied to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Early reports suggested a "catastrophic" mechanical failure.

Dr Atkinson praised the efforts of the coastguard, the RAF, lifeboat crews and other vessels sent to the scene.

'Deeply shocked'

"Dedication, determination, sacrifice, service, love.

"Some of the highest and best aspects of our humanity shine with a fresh light in the face of the darkest of tragedies," he told worshippers.

The Bishop of Norwich the Right Reverend Graham James, who was not at the service, said in a statement: "The people of Norfolk have been deeply shocked by this tragedy and our prayers will be with the grieving families.

"Events like this remind us of the fragility of life as well as the great risks many people bear in their daily work.

"We give thanks too for the rescue services and their courage and care."
