Hospitals treating troops wounded in Afghanistan are coming under increasing pressure because of the mounting numbers of injuries.
The warning, from Britain's public spending watchdog, the National Audit Office, comes ahead of a major military offensive in Helmand province.
It said more detailed planning was needed for possible scenarios involving a big increase in casualties.
Meanwhile, the government plans to announce a rise in compensation for many injured servicemen and women.
