More than 3,000 soldiers from the 4th Mechanised Brigade are taking part in final training exercises on Salisbury Plain before being deployed to Afghanistan.
Lt Col Paul James of 40 Commando, last deployed in Afghanistan two years ago, said it would be "a different fight this time", but was encouraged by more signs of normality in civilian life.
