Foreign Office Minister Ivan Lewis has condemned China's execution of a British man convicted of drug smuggling as unacceptable.

Akmal Shaikh, 53, a father from London, had denied any wrongdoing and his family said he was mentally ill.

Mr Lewis said that the Foreign Office presented evidence of Akmal Shaikh's mental health problems but that the Chinese authorities did not initiate a medical assessment prior to the execution.
