Melanie Slade met Theo Walcott about nine months ago |
The girlfriend of England's newest football star Theo Walcott has stepped into the spotlight to publicise Cancer Research UK's Race for Life. Melanie Slade, 17, is taking part in one of the 240 5km all-women races taking place across the UK in July.
Miss Slade, who is due to take AS level exams next week, appeared alongside five other partners of famous players at Tottenham's White Hart Lane ground.
The Southampton student said it was "nice" to raise awareness about cancer.
Miss Slade has been thrust into the spotlight after the surprise inclusion of Arsenal player Walcott, also 17, in England's World Cup squad.
Asked how the pressure was affecting her, she said: "I just concentrate on exams. I just keep my head down and keep doing it."
She said she was taking part in the 16 July race because she "just wanted to help".
The partner of West Ham and former England player Teddy Sheringham, Danielle Lloyd, who is Miss Great Britain, was also at the event.
She said it must be difficult for Miss Slade to adjust to the pressures of fame.
"It is difficult for all of us. We are all used to this situation, but it is still scary for us," she said.
Walcott was included in England's squad despite not having played a Premiership match for Arsenal since his multi-million pound move from Championship side Southampton in January.
