Race for Life runners raise money for Cancer Research UK |
A young breast cancer survivor who lost her mother and grandmother to the disease will lead thousands of runners in a race to raise cash for research. Emma Duncan, 31, from Cramlington, Northumberland, will be with 3,155 other runners during the 5km Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK.
It is hoped the race, at Newcastle Racecourse on Sunday, will raise thousands of pounds for the charity.
Miss Duncan survived an aggressive form of the disease with months of therapy.
She was just 29 when she discovered a lump in her breast and believes early detection helped save her life.
Because of her family history she was referred to the Institute of Human Genetics at the Centre for Life in Newcastle.
'Successfully treated'
A blood test confirmed she had inherited a faulty gene which meant she had a 50 to 80% chance of developing the disease.
Miss Duncan, an operation's manager an npower in Gateshead, said: "Having lost my mother at such an early age, breast cancer has always been at the forefront of my mind.
"It's been hard being a younger woman with breast cancer, but nevertheless I've come through it.
"Without research and fundraising that supports it, I may not have had the opportunity to be successfully treated."
Olivier Carruthers, Race for Life organiser, said: "We are delighted that Emma is here to start Race For Life and remind everyone why it is crucial to raise money to fund research."
