Trees could fall in high winds, say forecasters |
Parts of the UK could face flooding as severe gales meet this year's highest tides over the next few days, weather forecasters have warned. Northern Ireland, Wales and the South West may see gusts of up to 70mph.
In the South West and Wales, most south-facing coasts are on flood watch, the Environment Agency said.
BBC Weather forecaster Peter Gibbs warned winds could make travelling dangerous: "Gusts of 70mph are enough to bring down one or two trees."
"It's not going to be exceptional by October standards," he said, "we do expect a few storms during October and November, especially around the equinox. But what is unusual is to have high tides at the same time. "There is a very deep depression coming from the south west which has run across the central Atlantic and is now sitting 100 miles off the coast of the Isles of Scilly.
"But it is just as well it's not right on top of us - then it would be far worse."
Mike Dunning of the Environment Agency in the South West said they were watching the situation carefully for a "tidal surge", with the next high tide expected around 1700 BST Wednesday.
"I'd advise people to listen to forecasts and be aware of risks of flooding in their area," he said.
