The state of England's streets has been the subject of a study by a government-funded environmental charity behind the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

The Local Environmental Survey of England looked at 11,000 sites across 54 boroughs in nine English regions to rate tidiness.

Good:

The way London boroughs dealt with fly-tipping, cleaning up leaves, fly-posting, emptying litter bins and controlling the odour outside public toilets.

Poor:

Pavement grime outside public toilets and stations.

Pavement obstructions - from cafe tables to builders' rubble.

Satisfactory:

Curbing weed growth and graffiti.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else, from the way boroughs looked after lamp posts to the maintenance of landscaping.

Good:

Cleaned up fly-posting, graffiti, leaves and fly-tipping.

Satisfactory:

Keeping the area around public toilets clean. Tackling weeds.

Everything else, including the condition of litter bins and the maintenance of landscaping.

Cleaning the pavement outside public toilets and cleaning up weeds. The region also looked after lamp posts better than anyone else.

Everything else from cleaning up litter to looking after bins.
