'Cyrano de Bergerac' fly test

Scientists have genetically modified fruit flies so that a flash of light will trigger courtship songs in males and females.

Here, they test how effective these songs are by playing a recording of them to another pair of fruit flies.

The footage shows that the couple start to copulate when they hear the male song, but the artificially produced female song does not have the same effect.

Female fruit flies do not usually produce courtship songs.
