 | THE DAILY POLITICS |
If you're watching in broadband, here's how to find your favourite parts of the latest show. 1200 With only half an hour to fit in last night's elections and Tony Blair's clearing of the Labout front bench as well as a dollop of our usual spirit, Jenny welcomes our guests: shadow local government minister Caroline Spelman, the Labour MP Sadiq Khan and the Liberal Democrat Chief Whip, Paul Burstow. Paul Burstow tells us:
"It's an extraordinary situation where a Prime Minister can tell the House of Commons on Wednesday that he wants someone to stay in a job to put things right, and then sack them on Friday. That demonstrates that the Prime Minister is losing his grip and the government is losing its credibility and authority."
Sadiq Khan is sanguine:
"The reason we're not in panic mode is because we got a similar percentage two years ago, and we know what happened twelve months after that -- a whopping, third term, large Labour majority."
And Caroline Spelman on Tony Blair:
"He invited the country to vote on the performance of his government for the past nine years and they just did -- dramatically. We had a very good night, and it's very clear that the electorate has chosen the Conservative Party as the main alternative to Labour. And immediately, in a way to bury the bad news of the local election results, we see this reshuffle which is very far-reaching." 1202 BBC Political Editor Nick Robinson joins us after eleven minutes' sleep to discuss the Labour reshuffle: they say Tony Blair's reshuffles always go wrong, so will that apply this time?
1208 Also still standing from a night of live coverage of the local elections is our man Jeremy Vine, who's here to give us the results crunched out by his team of boffins, and explain who's come up trumps and who'll be crying themselves to sleep this lunchtime.
1215 Giles is on the green to tell us which political stories have been the most popular on the BBC website this week with his Top Of The Political Pops, before discussing the stories with compulsive neologist Kathy Lette.
1221 Back to the studio as Jenny welcomes the political editor of The Guardian, Michael White, and the new political editor of the Spectator, Fraser Nelson.
1227 And to catch up with the very latest on the government reshuffle, Nick Robinson returns. It's going to be quite a weekend: see you on Monday, with Andrew and Laura!
