But last year Panorama investigated how a Bolton businessman, Alan McNamara, was convicted of burglary on the strength of a single fingerprint, which experts said was flawed. With fresh forensic evidence to support McNamara's claims of innocence, reporter Shelley Jofre re-examines the case. She follows his family's attempts to clear his name and tries to get someone from the Fingerprint Society to talk about the problems - but all she finds is a profession ducking for cover.
