Former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy says he thinks Gordon Brown is safe for now, having "just about secured base camp" with his Cabinet reshuffle.

But he told the BBC's Newsnight programme, "you can only lead if the broader sense of goodwill is there," and that with by-elections to come it would remain tough for the prime minister for some time.
