Election issues: pensions

Declan talks pensions with Big John and Wee John

In the latest stage of his election rally, Declan Rally stopped off in Portrush, County Antrim, to talk pensions.

And who better to discuss them with than his own family?

Between them, they're a perfect example of our problem with saving for our retirement.

What you told Breakfast
I paid into a personal pension for seven years only to find that it is worth less than the contributions. Where is the incentive to save for retirement when a box under the bed is just as effective?
Andy Hannet, North Wales

Declan's father - known as Big John - is 59 and coming up for retirement.

Having been a teacher and a bookie, he's contributed to various pension plans over the years.

But he still feels that they're a gamble.

Declan's brother - wee John - who's 30, reckons that, with a mortgage, a car and a young family, he's got better things to spend his money on.

So: how can saving for our retirement be made more attractive - or should we just be compelled to do so?

Finance expert Jasmine Birtles laid out the issues, for the Curry family to digest.

Brian Sedgemore, who's standing down as the MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, is urging voters to "give Tony Blair a bloody nose".

He's been a consistent critic of key Labour policies and voted against the Iraq War, terrorist control orders and top-up fees for students.

He was also for several years Tony Blair's constituency MP.
