In pictures: Madeleine evidence

A dossier of evidence gathered by Portuguese detectives during the hunt for missing Madeleine McCann has been made public. It includes pictures of the apartment from where Madeleine went missing.

Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, vanished aged three on a holiday in the Algarve on 3 May 2007. The police inquiry into her disappearance was wound up last month due to a lack of evidence.

The McCanns' friend Jane Tanner made a sketch to show where she believed she saw Madeleine being abducted by a man. She stood at No 4, the man walked from 5 to 8. Mr McCann was standing at No 3.

Among the files was a CCTV image taken at 11.10am on 4 May 2007, at a petrol station in the Algarve. This potential lead came to nothing after the McCanns said the girl in the image was not their daughter.

The released pictures also show a bedroom at the apartment rented by the McCann family in the resort of in Praia da Luz. The bed where Madeleine was sleeping before she disappeared is circled.

Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, made an emotional plea for their daughter's return after she disappeared. The couple were staying at the apartment with Madeleine and her twin siblings.

Mrs McCann, who was having dinner with her husband and friends, told police when she went to the apartment to check on her children she found the window to Madeleine's room had been opened.

A description of a man seen on the night Madeleine went missing from the apartment "carrying a child or an object that could have been taken as a child" was later issued by police.

Portuguese police drew up e-fits of men seen hanging around Praia da Luz, but did not release them. This image was created from one witness account, but the individual was later ruled out of the inquiry.

A second image in the police files was generated from the account of British ex-pat Lance Purser, who said he thought the man he saw may have had "psychological problems", but the sighting led nowhere.

Detectives went on to name the McCanns as formal suspects in the disappearance of their daughter. But officers announced they were were no longer suspects when they closed the case.

Lawyers for the McCanns, both 40, were given access to the police files last week. They are now studying the papers for fresh leads the couple's private detectives can follow up, their spokesman says.
