On 4 May, 2007, the morning after three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappears from her parents' holiday apartment, the first missing posters go on display in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Portuguese police officers with search dogs look for clues outside the apartment where she went missing.

Holidaymakers and local people volunteer to form search teams helping Portuguese authorities scour the area.

British national Robert Murat, who lives close to the apartment where the McCanns were staying, is named an arguido, or official suspect, by the Portuguese police.

The Portuguese police also later name the McCanns as suspects in the disappearance of their daughter, and question them at a police station in Portimao, southern Portugal.

After several months the McCanns decide to leave Portugal and return back to the UK.

Madeleine's parents continue to appeal for her return, appearing on BBC Breakfast among various other press engagements.

As part of their campaign, the McCanns also release an artist's impression of a man they believe may have been responsible for abducting their daughter.

Robert Murat later accepts a �600,000 settlement from 11 British newspapers in a libel claim for stories written about him regarding Madeleine's disasppearance.
