The European Film Awards, held in Warsaw, recognise the best movies made around the continent in the year to July. Volver won five awards, with best actress Penelope Cruz thanking director Pedro Almodovar for "changing my life". But the top prize went to The Lives of Others, also known under its German name of Das Leben Der Anderen. Ulrich Muehe won best actor for his portrayal of a member of East Germany's secret police in The Lives of Others. Roman Polanski won a lifetime achievement award with The Pianist's Thomas Kretschmann (right) paying tribute. Oliver Twist actor Barney Clark (left) watched on as Polanski explained "only good things" happened to him in Warsaw. French actress Sophie Marceau was one of the presenters on a night which saw 15 awards handed out.
