Almodovar is a regular at the NY Film Festival |
Spanish-language comic drama Volver, directed by Pedro Almodovar, is to be the main attraction at the New York Film Festival, reports say. It will be shown in the Centrepiece slot during the two-week event, which begins on 29 September, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Pan's Labyrinth, a gothic fairytale by Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro, is to be the closing film.
A restored version of Warren Beatty's Reds has a 25th anniversary screening.
And The Queen, which is directed by Stephen Frears and stars Dame Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II, is the opening night gala movie.
'High point'
Volver features Penelope Cruz as part of a family dealing with supernatural events and the death of several relatives.
It represented "yet another high point for a director whose artistry seems to know no limits", festival selection committee chairman Richard Pena told the Hollywood Reporter.
The film won awards for best screenplay and best female ensemble cast in Cannes in May.
The horrors of war are described through the eyes of a young girl in Pan's Labyrinth.
This was "a haunting tale that deftly combines the director's penchant for the fantastic with a rich historical vision", Mr Pena said.
