Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's film Volver has received six nominations for this year's European Film Awards.

The acclaimed comedy-drama starring Penelope Cruz shares pole position with German film The Lives of Others.

They are just ahead of Ken Loach's The Wind That Shakes the Barley, which has five nominations. It won the top prize at Cannes, the Palme d'Or, in May.

Cillian Murphy is nominated for best actor for roles in Breakfast in Pluto and The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

Loach and Almodovar, two giants of European independent film-making, will compete for the best director award.

Cruz is nominated for best actress after sharing the Cannes best actress award with all of her female co-stars.

Austrian director Michael Haneke's thriller Cache (Hidden) won best film at the 2005 European Film Awards. This year's winners will be revealed in Warsaw, Poland, on 2 December.

The nominations for Volver and The Lives of Others will also put them in strong contention to be named in the foreign language category for next year's Oscars.
