Businesses support plans for GST
A Jersey politician is calling for some of the costs involved in bringing up children to be exempt from a proposed goods and sales tax (GST).

Health Minister Stuart Syvret wants education fees and the cost of child care to be exempt.

The 3% GST could be introduced in 2008 under a new tax system, which is predicted to leave a 100m hole in the government's finances.

But Senator Syvret says it will hurt people in Jersey who are less well off.

Other goods and services he wants an exemption for are basic foods, medical services and products, life insurance policies, books, newspapers and children's clothes.

Businesses in the island are supporting the GST proposals.
