People owe money on store cards and credit cards

The bureau said people who visited for advice owed an average of �25,000 to shops and banks. On the British mainland, it is about �13,000.

The figures come from amounts owed on store cards, credit cards and loans.

The island's consumer council said it was looking for ways to reduce how much people had to pay back to creditors.

The Citizens Advice Bureau also said it could assist people with large debts by helping arrange instalment payment plans with creditors.
