A consumer body has launched a campaign to improve the regulation of estate agents operating in Jersey. Jersey Consumer Council is calling for the threat of criminal prosecution for negligent practice by agents.
They are proposing agents give written terms of engagement and disclose the personal interest in a sale.
Julian Cubbage, joint president of the Estate Agents Association, said he welcomed reform and any fraudulent practices should be punished.
The Consumer Council said islanders often felt dissatisfied with the service from estate agents.
It has posted its proposals on its website and is asking for comments by the end of July.
At present, the responsibility for checking an agent's qualifications, experience and insurance lies with the customer.
