 More law firms are paying for conveyancing recommendations |
A growing relationship between Jersey's estate agents and lawyers could be harming the interests of people buying homes, it has been claimed. The island's Law Society is to decide whether the practice of paying estate agents to refer customers to them for conveyancing should continue.
There are concerns about pressure an estate agent may use in telling a homebuyer to use recommended law firms.
The Society is to determine if the practice breaches Code of Conduct.
The chairman of Jersey's Law Society, Geoffrey Crill, said a growing number of law firms were paying estate agents for recommending them to clients needing conveyancing services.
The Society will decide whether or not such behaviour is allowed under its code.
In the UK, it is allowed - provided the estate agent makes clear to the homebuyer that he or she is effectively under commission when recommending a law firm.
