People in Jersey must be prepared to "bite the bullet" when it comes to accepting new tax measures, a parish Deputy has said. However, St Ouen Deputy James Reed, added that the States must make sure they are as fair as possible.
Deputy Reed said he was still undecided on the question of the goods and services tax, and pay as you earn.
But he said he recognised the island did need to raise more money to ensure good healthcare and education.
Deputy Reed has organised a public meeting in his parish to discuss the issue. It is being held on Wednesday night in the Parish Hall at 2000 GMT.
The taxes are being considered by the States to cover a financial shortfall when a zero- rate corporation tax comes into force.
There has been much controversy over the proposed 5% VAT-type levy, which could be introduced as early as 2007.
