Government faces spending probe
An investigation into court and legal expenses could reveal how millions of pounds are spent by Jersey's States.

Politicians agreed to an independent investigation after the States spent 36m over the past six years.

Alan Breckon, chairman of the Consumer Council, said spending details should be readily available.

Mr Breckon became concerned earlier this year when a request for 3.3m for court and legal costs was circulated to States' members.

Deputy Breckon says the money usually comes from the General Reserve and is approved without question.

The consultants who will lead the investigation will also look at the 1.5m legal bill for the Les Pas court case.

During that, the States agreed to an out-of-court settlement with the company Les Pas Holdings over the contested ownership of part of the St Helier foreshore.
