Debt court stamp fees to change
Jersey currency
The fee reductions will cut the court's annual revenue by 21,000
People who cannot pay bills in Jersey and are taken to court may pay less in fees under changes being considered.

There was concern administration fees payable on all debts dealt with by the Petty Debts Court had risen too far.

At the moment, if someone is summoned to the court to pay a debt of up to 100, they need to pay stamp fees of 25. It had previously been 2.

Now the Finance Committee has said it had reconsidered it and the charge would be 10 instead.

Since the start of June, the Petty Debts Court has been able to hear cases where up to 10,000 is being claimed. The limit had been 2,500.

The move was designed to take pressure off the Royal Court that previously heard such cases.

But despite the fee change for amounts up to 100, a 25 charge for claims up to 1,000 and 50 for claims over that will stay the same.

The reduction will reduce the court's annual revenue by 21,000.
