La Moye is Jersey's only adult jail |
Jersey's new prison governor says his experience in the UK should help him deal with rising numbers at La Moye jail when he takes over running it. Steven Guy Gibbens, 51, is on the island all this week to become acquainted with his new job.
The former deputy governor at Feltham Young Offenders Institute officially begins work in August.
He is replacing Mike Kirby, who stands down at the end of the week to take up a post in the north of England.

During the interim period, Deputy Governor Charlie Bertram will be in charge. Part of Mr Gibbens' time this week is being spent being given a guided tour by the man he is replacing.
Outgoing governor Mike Kirby said there were ongoing problems at La Moye resulting from it being Jersey's only adult jail.
He said: "I think we still have a bit of a dilemma because we only have the one prison in Jersey.
"Within the UK, there is a range of different prisons, so people who don't need the levels of security that we've got at La Moye could be safely be working towards the rehabilitation and resettlement in a much more organised way."
Mr Gibbens' said he was well placed to deal with the island's criminal justice system.
He said on why he accepted the job: "I think it was the challenge of working in a community where you can really work with the offenders while they're in prison and, of course, after their release.
"One of the things we've got to do is talk with the other partner agencies and to talk with the people of Jersey to make sure we are making the best use of the very limited resources that we have got, and that we're locking up the people that we really need to lock up."
