Incentives for drug-free inmates
La Moye Prison sign
The prison is trying to motivate people to give up drug habits
The number of inmates at Jersey's prison testing positive for drugs is falling.

Fifty inmates at La Moye, of a total prison population of about 170, now live in two drug-free wings.

If they pass three tests a month, they are entitled to special privileges like better living conditions and the chance to work in the community.

Prison governor Mike Kirby says the two wings are cutting the number of inmates who use drugs.

He said: "Every prison in the UK has problems with drug use. It's a question of both trying to reduce the supply and the demand.

"So we have various ways like the drug dogs and searching visitors, cameras are in the visitor room to reduce the supply.

"We've also got to look at motivating people to give up the drugs habit and also provide education drugs awareness packages to help to reduce the demand."
