Jaya weighed just under two kilograms when he was born |
The latest addition to Jersey Zoo's orangutan enclosure is making good progress a week after his birth. Jaya was born by caesarean section to his mother Gina, 40, and delivered by consultants from the General Hospital.
It was a day of high drama last Thursday when the birth of Gina's sixth baby became complicated by a blockage in her birth canal.
Consultant gynaecologist Neil McLachlan had to be brought in to perform the caesarean.
Jaya was born weighing just 1.86kg (just over 4lbs).
A week on, zoo staff say he is well and feeding regularly.
Successful mating
Gina too is much better, although still on painkillers and antibiotics, and is bonding well with her latest offspring.
Unless the condition of either worsens, the pair of Sumatran orangutans are likely to be put on view to the public as early as Thursday.
The baby's father is the group's dominant male Dagu, and it is the first successful mating for the pair.
The gestation period for orangutans is very similar to humans, lasting on average 265 days or 8.5 months.
