The Anglican Dean of Jersey, the Very Reverend John Seaford, is to retire after 12 years in the post.

Mr Seaford will step down as the Head of the Church of England in the island next summer.

He was appointed in 1993 to the position which has both a political and pastoral role.

The post holder is a member of the States of Jersey by virtue of his office and is allowed to speak on moral, religious and ethical issues.

Leaving area

Mr Seaford is also the leader of the island's Anglican clergy and lay workers.

Before coming to Jersey, Mr Seaford served in a number of parishes in the south of England, including Highcliffe near Bournemouth.

He and his wife, Helen, are planning to return to the area in retirement.

The name of a new dean will be announced by the Bishop of Winchester in the New Year.
